Thoracic spine and rib pain
The ribs are the bony framework of the chest cavity. The thoracic spine and ribcage provide protection for the heart and lungs and are essential for breathing.
There are many causes of thoracic spine pain. These range from mild pain, such as restricted rib mobility due to posture alteration or an altered breathing pattern which usually resolves very quickly with treatment, to more serious issues like rib fracture, Tietze syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome or intercostal neuralgia.
Patients with thoracic spine and rib pain often experience restricted neck and thoracic spine movement. They may also experience increased pain when lying on the affected side with symptoms becoming aggravated when breathing.
The good news is that the majority of cases can be resolved with physiotherapy. With a correct diagnosis, hands-on treatment, postural advice, and an exercise programme tailored to your needs you can get back to your usual fitness level and pain-free movement.
