Sacroiliac joint pain (SIJ)
The sacroiliac joints are located between the sacrum and the ilium bones and are essential for effective load transfer between the spine and the legs during activities such as walking, running, jumping and bending.
Patients with a long history of low back pain and pregnant women with Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) are the most vulnerable groups for SIJ pain.
Pain from the sacroiliac joint may refer to the buttock, into the groin and down the back of the leg to the foot mimicking sciatica pain. Patients often report worsening of symptoms during activities such as walking, climbing stairs, sitting upright and standing.
Physiotherapy can be very helpful to treat this condition. With a correct diagnosis, hands-on treatment, postural advice, and an exercise programme tailored to your needs you will be able to get back to your usual fitness level and pain-free movement.
